ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

John Sullivan, Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary

John Sullivan is a Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer and Corporate Secretary at Costco Wholesale Corporation in Issaquah, Washington, where he has been since 2001. Previously, he was a member of the firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson in New York City in the litigation department where he practiced from 1985 to 2001. John attended law school at the University of Missouri School of Law. 

Karen Raines, Corporate Counsel - Regulatory / Sustainability /Social Responsibility / Environmental Legal

Karen Raines has been a Corporate Counsel with Costco Wholesale Corporation since 1997. For the first 10 years of practice at Costco, Karen focused on retail operations, customs compliance and hazardous material compliance issues. In 2007 she moved to the business-side of the company and created and managed the Corporate Sustainability and Energy program, which developed and implemented responsible environmental practices across Costco’s operations, including clean energy sources, recycling and waste diversion programs, cleaner consumer products and packaging, and hazardous material handling practices.

In 2017, Karen returned to the legal department and currently leads alcohol and tobacco regulatory compliance, private label alcohol transactions, e-commerce alcohol delivery transactions, green chemistry (safer chemicals in consumer goods) reporting and Conflict Minerals reporting requirements.

Before attending law school, Karen gained communication media business and government regulatory experience at KISW-FM, Group W Cable, KCTS-9 Public Television and at the King County, WA Office of Cable Regulations.

Karen earned a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in San Francisco, CA and a B.A. in Communication from Washington State University, in Pullman, WA.

Sergio Ahedo Mendoza, Corporate Counsel - Mexico/International Legal

Sergio Ahedo serves as Corporate Legal Affairs Director at Costco México. He joined the company 30 years ago as the first lawyer when he founded and now leads the Legal Affairs Department, advising the legal area in several areas of the law including corporate, civil, fiscal and criminal matters.

Sergio started his 35-year career in the world of retail with “Comercial Mexicana”, one of the most influential supermarket retailers in Mexico. Before that, Sergio served as a lawyer in various law firms in Mexico.

Educational Background: Sergio has three graduates: one in Business Law from ITAM, a Diploma in Labor Law and a Diploma in Criminal Law, both from Universidad Panamericana.

Chris Koa, Corporate Counsel - Corporate / Technology Transactions / IT/ IP Legal

Christopher M. Koa serves as Corporate Counsel at Costco, where he leads corporate, commercial, technology transactions, IT and IP-related deals and as a Board member of ArtsFund (www.artsfund.org), which provides funding and strategic guidance to dozens of arts and culture non-profit organizations around Seattle.

Chris has 20+ years of experience representing customers and providers with domestic and international technology transactions including cloud computing, software licensing and consulting services and strategic sourcing, as well as the IT, IP, data security and privacy aspects of M&A deals and other matters.

Before joining Costco, Chris served in in-house counsel positions focused on corporate, M&A, securities, IT, and corporate transactional matters including at BP, Dell and Microsoft and was in private practice with AmLaw 100 law firms Wilson Sonsini, Dorsey & Whitney and Brobeck Phleger & Harrison.

Chris has also acquired business-side experience as an investment banker focused on private financings, IPOs and M&A deals with WR Hambrecht + Co.

Chris earned a JD from NYU Law School, MPA from Princeton University and BA from Carleton College.

Marianne Gavlak Bundren, Corporate Counsel - Real Estate Legal

Marianne Bundren serves as Corporate Counsel at Costco and supports real estate development and acquisition for new Costco warehouses and business centers in the Northeast, Southeast and San Diego Region (SD, CO, AZ, NV, NM and CO). She has over 30 years’ experience in all aspect of real estate development, acquisition and operation. Previously Ms. Bundren was with McGuire Woods, The Mills Corporation (now owned by Simon Property Group), and Pillsbury. She has been with Costco since 2013. Marianne graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1988.
